West Indies clinched a four-wicket win against England in the first Test at Southampton. The victory gave the Caribbeans a 1-0 lead in the series.
England set a target of 200 runs for West Indies. While chasing the target Jason Holders’s side saw an early collapse of two wickets in six runs. Top run-getter in the first innings Kraigg Brathwaite was bowled by Jofra Archer for just four runs.
Another opener, John Campbell got retired hurt. The most dependable batsman Shai Hope couldn’t stay for long in the third wicket, he got himself bowled by the veteran paceman Mark Wood after scoring just nine runs.
After Shamarh Brooks got out for duck against Jofra Archer, 28-year-old all-rounder Roston Chase and Jermaine Blackwood took the helm of the West Indies for the fourth wicket. These two added 73 runs. The English paceman Archer also broke the pair by returning Chase who scored 37 runs.
Blackwood led the West Indies to the victory with the wicket-keeper batsman Shane Dowrich in the fifth wicket. Blackwood picked up the 11th half-century of his Test career on the way to forming a partnership. After the tea break, Stokes picked up the wicket of Dowrich who scored 20 runs.
Just before that, this Caribbean batsman got his life for the sake of no-ball. After Dowrich’s return, Blackwood was on his way to his second Test century with captain Jason Holder. But unfortunately his brilliant knock of 95 from 154 got stopped by Stokes.
While seeing the disaster of the team opener Campbell returned to the field with his injury and with his help and the determination of skipper Holder West Indies got the win. The Caribbean captain remained unbeaten on 14 runs while facing 36 bowls.
Earlier, England were bowled out for 316 on the fifth day. England finished the fourth day with 284 runs for eight wickets. On the morning of the fifth day, the English were able to add only 34 runs with the remaining two wickets.
Caribbean fast bowler Shannon Gabriel took both the wickets and through that he got his five-wicket haul and combining his first-innings four-wicket made him the Man of Match.
West Indies skipper Jason Holder took one wicket. In addition, Roston Chase and Alzarri Joseph took two wickets each.
Zak Crawley scored the highest 76 from 127 bowls for England in the second innings. 50 runs came from Dom Sibley’s bat. Captain Ben Stokes made 46 and Rory Burns made 42 off the bat. Archer continued to bat at the end and scored 23 runs.
In the first innings, England were bowled out for 204. Batting in reply, West Indies ended the innings with 318 runs. As a result, the Caribbeans got a lead of 114 runs from the first innings.
