Former Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir describes Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the lucky captain of Team India, stating that he got the benefits of the hard work that was put in by his predecessors, mostly Saurav Ganguly.
The 38-year-old has been the greatest of all time for the Men in Blue because in his tenure as skipper he led and won the 2007 Twenty20 World Cup, 2011 World Cup and one ICC Champions Trophy.
As Test skipper, Dhoni led India to the top of the Test rankings for the first time and Gambhir believes that it happened because of the left-arm pace bowler Zaheer Khan that the team managed to be so successful.
“The reason Dhoni became such a successful captain in Test cricket is because of Zaheer Khan. He was a big blessing that Dhoni got, for which credit goes to Sourav Ganguly. According to me, Zaheer has been India’s best world-class bowler,” Gautam Gambhir said.
“Dhoni has been a very lucky captain because he got an amazing team in every format. Captaining 2011 World Cup team was very easy for Dhoni because we had players like Sachin, Sehwag, Myself, Yuvraj, Yusuf, Virat, so he had got the best teams, while Ganguly had to work very hard for it, and as a result, Dhoni won so many trophies,” Gambhir said in an Indian media.
It was Dhoni who finished off with style through an eye-catching six against Lankan paceman Nuwan Kulasekara that ended the long drought of 28 years and lifted the 2011 World Cup Trophy.
After having a couple of collapses at the beginning of the final match, Gambhir took the strike and managed to gear up the team by scoring 97 while the wicket-keeper batsman Dhoni suddenly promoted himself to No 4 and smashed an unbeaten 91 as India won by six wickets.
